Living Heritage and Artisans of West Malaysia

An insightful journey highlighting Malaysia’s arts and culture

EXO has combined a curated collection of walking tours, artisan visits, homestays and more to reveal the best of Western Malaysia’s living heritage.

EXO Malaysia Product Manager Ilaria Coco explains, ‘The Living Heritage Tour really allows guests to get an in-depth look at mixed Malaysian culture and to be in contact with the locals.’

The trip begins in Kuala Lumpur, jumping right in with an evening walking tour that introduces the city’s diverse heritage through food and architecture. Highlights include Merdeka Square, the Friday Mosque and  the vibrant markets along Petaling Street.

The next day focuses on Malaysia’s Hindu population, exploring their historic roots and colourful culture with visits to local shops, markets and a temple for a special blessing.

During a two-night stay in Ipoh, guests will explore the heritage sites of the Old Town, culinary delights and natural wonders.

A scenic train ride takes guests onwards to their next destination, Ipoh, for a two-night stay.

A guided walk along Ipoh’s Heritage Trail introduces guests to the landmarks and historic architecture found within its Old Town. During the walk, guests will also be introduced to Ipoh’s culinary heritage with a sampling of the local coffee and beloved laksa noodles. For a deeper look at Ipoh’s past, a visit to Han Chin Pet Soo Museum reveals an impressive collection of artefacts, collectables and photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Aside from Ipoh’s rich history, guests will also have an opportunity to explore some of the region’s natural wonders with visits to Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple and the impressive Gua Tempurung Caves.

‘The homestay experience is the right balance between private relaxation and the opportunity to engage with a very welcoming host.’

Continuing through Western Malaysia, the next stop on EXO’s Living Heritage and Artisans of West Malaysia journey is Chenderoh Lake where guests will be treated to a two-night Malay homestay.

The warm, welcoming hosts share their daily life and culture with the guests and excursions are arranged to nearby villages and nature, rounding out this unique experience.

Ilaria explains, ‘The homestay experience is the right balance between private relaxation and the opportunity to engage with a very welcoming host. It truly feels like home away from home.

See how the past is linked to Penang’s present with visits to craft workshops, observation of traditional ancestor worship and walks through heritage neighbourhoods and a 150-year-old market.

After bidding farewell to the homestay, guests travel by boat to a traditional fishing village near Kuala Sepetang before continuing on to Penang.

A full day walking tour explores the city’s mix of cultural heritage, with diverse architecture, art and culinary delights. There are plenty of opportunities to see how the past is linked to the city’s present, with visits to craft workshops, observation of traditional ancestor worship and walks through heritage neighbourhoods and a 150-year-old market. The day wraps up with a ride by bebak, traditional trishaw, through Georgetown’s night market.

The second day in Penang is focused on art. The morning is spent at Art and Garden, a mix of botanical and man-made sculptures, followed by a stop at Balik Pulau to admire it’s famous murals. In the afternoon, visit Hin Depot’s arts and crafts community and a unique glasswork studio.

EXO’s Living Heritage and Artisans of West Malaysia is an insightful journey into the country’s past and present. Our team can tailor this journey to fit guests’ personal interests and travel style. We also recommend pairing this cultural discovery with a beach break at one of Malaysia’s fabulous coastal regions.
